Artist statement

All the images I take are inspired by my curiosity for the natural world. It’s the simplicity of my subjects that challenge me to create a new perspective at the too often unnoticed universe of shapes, patterns and structures. In today‘s continuous growth of technology and disconnection from nature I feel the necessity to emphasize the importance of our planet and the desire to preserve it by visualizing its enchantments through beauty and serenity. This fragility of our piece of cosmos is a constant that can be found in all of my series, most noticeable in the works with butterflies and moths, where I decided to capture the insects during their short lifespan and also after their departure from life. This ephemerality I see in all living-beings is a representation of life and death at the same time. It‘s my wish to capture this precise moment, this feeling that will never reoccur again, creating something unique and truthful.

Choosing analog photography as my working method allows me to be involved in the whole process, from taking the picture to developing the film and finally making silver gelatin prints in the darkroom. Nevertheless, even though I appreciate being able to control many parameters in analog photography, there is always a chance of the appearance of coincidences that might lead to unexpected results.
